mimecentrum - the mime festival

The Internationaal MimeFestival for Flanders, better known as “The Broken Silence”, has just finished a fifth succesfull edition in the year 2001.

The festival takes place every year during the second week of October and is here to keep people up to date with the evolution of this discipline.

Founded in 1997 it was brought to life in order to introduce and widen the intrest of the audience for mime performances from all over the world.

In 2000 the festival created a international price for new mime artists : The PinokkioPrice.

With this prize, we aim to stimulate young and/or debutant mimes creations.
why Pinokkio? Because with words we can lie, but the body never lies.
Because Pinokkio experienced it closely, he became our godfather.

This prize is awarded by an international jury and the winner gets €750.

Were present this year:

Marta Carrasco (Spain) was in charge of our Opening Night. She presented her solo "Blanc d'Ombra". She explored the essence of a creative action on stage. The result was an acrobatic theatre, an emotional dance where all theatrical limits seem to disappear. We only can hope she comes back soon !

In the Openiong week end, we witnessed the birth of a remarkable young talent. Judith Nad (Holland), presented her most recent creation: "Twilight". Expressive theatre, an original and convincing variation on shadow play, full of surprises. Reallity vanished in front of our eyes !

Theatre de l'Ange Fou gave us the opportunity to see again an extraordinary combination of skill and talent, with their new show Entangled Lives. A boost of energy, in a cloud of absurd poetry. An amazing evening!!

"Die Sonderlinge" - DIE SONDERLINGE (Oekraïn)
The clown note was brought by Oukraïns performers. They brought us a bewiching show where inanities of life was the red line trough the performance. The characters on stage were inspired by the typical russian clowns theatre from today.

"Freja" (Sweden)
For the second time in our festival, PANTOMIMTEATERN presented a remarcable children performance.
A story about a girl that likes action. For Freya life is like a merry that is going around very fast ! Ferrylike and jolly mime theatre for children in a flashing scene.

"Let your brains go pop" - LES BUBB (UK)
A vedette at BBC, in the programme Hububbn now for it's fourth season, and a wellknown figure in UK's Cabaret, circus and variety. He brought an hilarious note to our festival: 60 minutes of astonishing physical comedy, and what he does with rubber is simply indescribable.

"Ambrosia" - PEP BOU (Spain)
For the closing night Pep Bou once more raises the curtain on the visual poetry of soap bubbles. This time, in contrast to the previous shows, the bubbles were not an end in themselves but a means. They are a fragile and completely unpredictable vehicle, from which the characters do not know the true destiny.
